December 2007
Highlights from the preceding month
November was the first time our 5 th graders go to experience the annual Turkey Trot. Congratulations to Brooke Brenner, our first place girl finisher and Skye Harter, our first place boy finisher. Each received a turkey and one of the famous Turkey Trot t-shirts.
Also in October we had our second and third conference nights. We were able to meet with a lot of our parents during the two open conference nights. That is one thing the fifth grade staff was striving to accomplish.
Upcoming Events
It's time to clean out those closets and bedrooms. This month the fifth grade will be participating in our annual “new and gently used” toy drive. We have been doing this for the past 10 years. All toys collected will be donated to the Children's Services Board.
On Friday, December 21, fifth grade teachers will be wrapping up 2007 with various activities in their classrooms. Classroom teachers will be planning the activities, however if you would like to donate a snack, please check with your child's teacher.
Teaching and Learning
In math, our classes are working hard to cover the 5 th grade material required by the end of the first semester. Concepts covered so far are decimal place value, place value with numbers, order of operations, and data and graphing.
As we work our way into fractions, parents can help at home by reviewing basic skills. Skills that need focused on are multiplication, division with single digit divisors and division with two digit divisors.
Mrs. Forchione is working with the students in enrichment activities. Please encourage your child to participate in any activity of interest. These activities are open to all students and occur during the lunch/recess/acceleration time.
